چکیده

I review progress in understanding the evolution of normal field and cluster galaxies through the combination of HST imaging and ground-based spectroscopy. These data suggest that the bulk of the star formation producing the present-day galaxy population occurred at accessible redshifts, z <2. Furthermore, a surprising amount of the detailed processing that shaped the Hubble sequence and morphologydensity relation occurred surprisingly recently. The stage is thus set for a concerted attack on these questions with the present generation of 8-10 metre large telescopes. An important step forward will be the development of efficient survey techniques for the systematic exploration of the z >1 Universe. Some possible approaches are briefly

Se p 19 96 Quantitative Morphology of Moderate Redshift Galaxies : How Many Peculiars Are There ?

The advent of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has provided images of galaxies at moderate and high redshifts and changed the scope of galaxy morphologies considerably. It is evident that the Hubble Sequence requires modifications in order to incorporate all the various morphologies one encounters at such redshifts. We investigate and compare different approaches to quantifying peculiar galaxy ...

Evolution of Disk Galaxies in the Goods-south Field: Number Densities and Size Distribution.1

We examine the evolution of the sizes and number densities of disk galaxies using the high resolution images obtained by the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The multiwavelength images are used to classify galaxies based on their rest–frame B-band morphologies out to redshift z ∼ 1.25. In order to min...

The Deep Groth Strip Survey. I. the Sample1,2

The Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Probe (DEEP) is a multi-phase research program dedicated to the study of the formation and evolution of galaxies and of large scale structure in the distant Universe. This paper describes the first five-year phase, denoted DEEP1. A series of ten DEEP1 papers will discuss a range of scientific topics (e.g., the study of photometric and spectral properties of a ...

The Apparent Morphology of Peculiar Galaxies at Intermediate to High Redshifts

To understand the range of morphologies observed in the galaxy population at high redshift, it is instructive to evaluate the appearance of local peculiar galaxies when placed at cosmological distances. To this end, we use rest frame ultraviolet (UV), B, and V band images of five nearby (z < 0.02) interacting and/or starbursting galaxies to simulate deep HST observations of peculiar galaxies at...

The Faint Sub-millimeter Galaxy Population: Hubble Space Telescope Morphologies and Colors

We present optical morphologies obtained from deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) and ground-based images for galaxies selected from the first sub-millimeter (sub-mm) survey of the distant Universe. Our sample comprises galaxies detected in deep 850-μm continuum maps of seven massive clusters, obtained using SCUBA, the new bolometer camera on the JCMT. The survey covers a total area of 0.01degre...
